For Those in the Basin

Is it true that there is not a decent place to eat up in Vernal?

Just curious.

Seems that if it is true, that there might be a market for someone that is willing to open an eatery that makes quality food.

Just thinkin' out loud.

Define decent. JB's sucks, Frontier grill is over priced and low quality since the new owners took over, Stockman's in Ft. Duchesne and Vernal is way over priced for the quality, Golden Corral is Golden Corral. 7-11 Ranch restaurant is so so for the price. Then there's the "fast" food. The only fast part about it is how fast it goes through you.

I've always thought someone could make a killing opening a place like Denny's or Village Inn. Open 24/7, breakfast all day, LOTS of semi parking, and make it a decent price. If you had a truck stop with an eat store you could make a killing. Truckers for the last 12+ years have always wanted a place to shower and eat without paying for a night at a motel.

One good place to eat in Roosevelt is Kody's Cafe. Closed on Mondays and open I think from 5am to 2:30 or 3pm. Good food, good service, and Kody will even come visit with you at times. He's a down syndrome kid.

That's my take on eating in town. Take it for what it's worth.

So there is not a really good place for food anywhere around. I'm talking a creative place that serves quality food for a decent price.

Thanks, Steve. It gives me a food for thought.

There are a couple grease joints that I didn't mention.

Round Robin. Open when God tells him to. Good food, busy as all get out when they are open. When you place your order they tell you how long it will be and they are usually within 2-3 minutes of being right on. As long as indians are eating there, it's all good. The guy may preach to you while you eat there, so you just take it in stride and enjoy your food. For those of us still drinking soda, no real soda there. It's all some generic brand. Wannabe Mt. Dew, Dr. Pepper, etc. Only order the small fries/onion rings with your meal. Large is too big. Also good English chips.

Rocky's Place. Good shakes, decent food, prices have gone up as have all other places. If you go when the owners are working, you get your food at a decent time. If it's just kids, good luck on calling it fast food. Some have waited 30 minutes or more for just drinks.

One place that could be good but has high prices is the new Hollow Moon Cafe. I think you said something about Mad Ogre going there. When they opened this year, soda refills in the convenience store side were fifty cents. Now a 32 oz. refill is 1.05 after tax. A new one is 1.58 or so. Big rip off on the stuff, but they have the market of being in the location they are in. Food prices are high from what I've seen on the menu. From what I've heard they aren't all that special.

So that being said. Come open a truck stop/restaurant in Roosevelt soon. Not Vernal, they have enough stuff over there for their tax base. We need it here.

There are NO places to be excited about. You're just stuck with them. Even Arby's (which I love) costs twice as much in town than anywhere else. So we never go there. That's why we look forward to our visits in the city.
