They're Here

So I've finally received my YRG dvds in the mail. I've watched the 50+ workout, and the special features section to get motivated, and I'm rarin' to go. I bought an exercise mat, kneepads, and wrist wraps to keep my joints from killing me, and I think that's all I need to worry about for now.
A heart monitor would be nice, but I'll hold off on that for awhile.

The first thing I've been doing since I got the dvds has been to try and change my breathing patterns. Adults don't breathe right for a number of reasons, and I can tell that I'm just as guilty as anyone. I've been practicing anytime I think about it, and it helps with staying calm and improving my attitude.

Here's DDP's advice on breathing...

"Breathing is the most important thing we do. We can go without eating for weeks, drinking for days, but we can’t go without breathing for a couple of minutes. Start by putting your hand on your stomach, and practice by breathing in and pushing your stomach out like Santa Claus, so the air will go down deep into your stomach. And as you exhale, pull your stomach back toward your spine, have it contract toward your back, toward your spine. And when you can do that for a three second breath, take it to five, take it to ten. You can control anything if you breathe properly."

The basic yoga I've been doing has helped me tremendously. I had to go do a small job this morning, and I got out of bed and got ready for work without doing my warm ups. Big mistake. About an hour into the job, my back was screaming, and I was standing in a pool staining some grout, in a haze of misery and wishing I could go lay down in an easy chair.

So in the bottom of this empty pool, I sat down and got into the butterfly position as well as I could in my jeans, and I went through my lower back sequence for about five minutes. After I got back up, my back was loose and comfortable, and I ripped through the rest of the job with no pain. Awesome!

I tell you, I was skeptical at first, but I'm becoming a believer in this yoga business. I'll give an After Action Report after the first workout tomorrow...

I wish you well.

I heard about the adults breathing wrong thing last year...on Oprah. They said to watch a baby/toddler breath if you don't know if you're doing it right--they do.

What?! Now I should worry about breathing wrong? Of all the things I probably do wrong in a day, I guess it's no big deal to chalk up something else to it!

Yeah, if you breathe like a baby does, it brings on a calming effect. It's very surprising. I was almost run down by some idiot illegal yesterday on the 60, and it took only a couple of deep breaths to get myself into a calm state.

Normally, I'd be stewing about almost getting into an accident for at least ten minutes after the fact.

Good stuff.
